MY THIEVES’ CODE

Since 2024, visual artist and writer Maarten Inghels has been applying his own sign system to the pavements of the cities he visits. For each front door, he carefully chooses a symbol based on what he can discover about the resident through the window or the mailbox. Does someone own a lot of books? Is there a cat in the window? Can he hear a dog? Do the posters in the window reveal something about political preferences? Does the resident have a security camera? A garden or a swimming pool?

With this intervention in public space, Inghels investigates and documents the stigmatizing term "thieves' code". At the same time, he attempts to make the intimate public. To an outsider, the signs are enigmatic, but with the accompanying legend, the street becomes legible in a different way. The work invites reflection on fears related to migration and the pressure on our privacy.

The poster was presented in the exhibition 'Dievencode' at M HKA (September–October 2026), which was co-financed by the European Union, the Flemish government, and the Province of East Flanders within the LEADER rural development programme.

MIJN DIEVENCODE

Sinds 2024 brengt beeldend kunstenaar en schrijver Maarten Inghels een eigen tekensysteem aan op de trottoirs van de steden waar hij komt. Voor elke voordeur kiest hij zorgvuldig een symbool, gebaseerd op wat hij over de bewoner kan ontdekken via het raam of via de brievenbus. Heeft iemand veel boeken? Zit er een kat op de vensterbank? Hoort hij een hond? Onthullen de affiches aan het raam iets over politieke voorkeuren? Heeft de bewoner een beveiligingscamera? Een tuin of een zwembad?

Met deze ingreep in de publieke ruimte onderzoekt en documenteert Inghels de stigmatiserende term dievencode. Tegelijkertijd probeert hij het intieme publiek te maken. Voor een buitenstaander zijn de tekens raadselachtig maar met de bijbehorende legenda wordt de straat op een andere manier leesbaar. Het werk nodigt uit tot reflectie over angsten in relatie tot migratie en de druk op onze privacy.

De poster werd gepresenteerd in de expo ‘Dievencode’ in M HKA (september-oktober 2026) die medegefinancierd werd door de Europese Unie, de Vlaamse overheid en de provincie Oost-Vlaanderen binnen het plattelandsprogramma LEADER.
